MARLIN DEAN LEE III
Marlin Dean Lee III is a loving father & husband…he is an adored son & grandson…he
is caring older brother, uncle, nephew, cousin & friend. Very few people in this world
have a reputation as impeccable as Marlins’. He’s not perfect, but ask anyone who has
ever met him and they will tell you there isn’t an individual alive that has more integrity,
better character, lives more by honest, hard-working values and has a better heart than
Marlin.
Marlin Lee is only 26 years old but has accomplished so much already in his life and has
the potential to do so much more if given the opportunity. He has inspired thousands of
people he has never even met with his courage, his dignity, and his incredible mental and
physical toughness.
Marlin Lee is only 26 years old and he is battling for his life. Marlin has a rare and
especially deadly form of cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma. What makes Ewings
even more hideous is that it is only found in children and sometimes young adults
like Marlin…and there is no established protocol for treating Ewings like there is
with other cancers. Its hit-or-miss chemo, radiation and clinical trials. That is the
point at where Marlin is now…chemo and radiation treatments have only been
mildly successful and his cancer continues to spread. Marlin and his family are now
weighing all the options for clinical trials that may be available…but those trials are
incredibly expensive and are rarely ever covered by insurance. Marlin now needs
your help financially in continuing his valiant battle…along with many prayers for
his healing and complete recovery.
Who is Marlin Dean Lee III? He is the oldest of two sons born to Marlin Lee Jr. &
D’Anna Lee on April 15, 1986 in Houston, Texas. Marlin’s parents knew he was
something special from the beginning. From the time he was just a toddler, Marlin
III displayed his way-above-average intelligence and the quality of being an “old
soul”.. possessing child-like innocence but also a maturity beyond his years…often
demonstrated in the way he always attempted to look after his little brother Kellen, two
years his junior, when both were young.
Marlin spent the first five years of his life moving several times because of his parents
occupations. He changed schools 5 times in his first four years of school attending classes
in Houston, Austin, Cedar Park & Victoria, Texas.
In January 1995, the Lee Family made a big move when Marlin Jr., a broadcaster, took a
job at a radio station in Lancaster, Wisconsin, a beautiful little town of 4,000 people.
Marlin III would attend Lancaster Community Schools from third grade until he
graduated in 2004. Marlin III considers Lancaster his hometown.
He was always an excellent student and especially excelled and enjoyed social studies
and current events. In 8th grade he was captain of the Lancaster Middle School News
Bowl team which placed first for the entire state in Wisconsin and 17th nationally. He
also was a Geography Bee winner and 2nd place finisher in the Social Studies Bee at
LMS.
Marlin was very active in band beginning in 6th grade all the way through his fours years
at Lancaster High School. He started out playing trumpet but left that behind to take up
drums/percussion for seven years. Marlin was in marching, concert, jazz, quartet and pep
band, which was his favorite as he played a full drum kit at LHS basketball games. He
also won ensemble medals for snare drum during a number of band competitions.
Marlin III’s first love though has always been sports. From the time was small he would
diagram plays, read sports books and magazines and collect sports cards. He played six
years of baseball, usually at second base…he was also high school basketball manager
for 4 years, but football is the sport that is his passion. Marlin played seven years of
football and would have played more years but Lancaster did not have youth football
until he began high school. His entire playing career, from pee wee to being part of three
Wisconsin Football State Championship teams for the Lancaster Flying Arrows, Marlin
played center. Virtually always the smallest guy on the offensive line, he regularly took
on opponents almost twice his weight. At Marlin’s senior football banquet, his position
coach Joe Schulte said he had the best form and technique of any of any of the linemen
and said “For those of you who don’t think they make ‘em (players) like they used to..
(pointing to Marlin)..there’s one guy that is like they use to make ‘em in every good
sense possible”.
Marlin was always well liked and respected by his teachers and classmates, never got into
trouble…and his parents would tell you (other than maybe not cleaning his room) he was
and is the complete picture of everything you could ever hope a son would be. He doesn’t
drink, has never touched drugs or tobacco and virtually never swears.
Upon graduating from high school, Marlin moved back to Houston to attend college,
living with his paternal grandparents, Mimi and Poppy, for the next six years. He first
earned his Associates Degree from San Jacinto College in 2006 and the went on to
graduate with honors from the University of Houston in 2009 with a Bachelors of Science
in Kinesiology specializing in Sports Administration and Health.
While attending college, Marlin continued his involvement with football. He followed in
the Lee tradition of football coaches (his Dad coached for 27 years, his brother also was
a football coach, and Mom a football cheerleading coach). He was a little league Football
Coach for the Houston area Sagemont Cowboys (who he formerly was a player with) for
six years. He loved working with the kids, was a natural at it and admired by everyone
within the Cowboy organization.
Marlin does indeed have a passion for sports. From 2005-2010 he was the preeminent
football recruiting expert for the state of Wisconsin, serving as Chief Football writer
and Scout for the Wisconsin Sports Network. He was known and respected in college
recruiting circles around the country. Marlin is an outstanding writer, and during the time
he was at WSN, he made numerous appearances on radio stations across Wisconsin and
also wrote for ESPN’s high school coverage.
While attending college, Marlin served internships with the Arena Football League’s
Houston Copperheads and professional hockey’s Houston Aeros. For one year he was a
Marketing Associate for the NBA’s Rockets and for three years was a Quality Assurance
Tailgate Representative for the NFL Houston Texans.
After graduation, Marlin had brief stints with the Regional Indoor Football League as
Marketing Director and as Program Director with I9 Sports. In August 2010, he began
working for Academy Sports and Outdoors, a huge retail sporting goods chain, which
operates over 130 stores in eleven states. Academy and Marlin were made for each other,
and he has been on the fast track of moving up the corporate ladder. He likes his job
and the folks at Academy love him and have been VERY supportive of Marlin during
his illness. Marlin’s current position is Promotions Coordinator, which involves him
in all aspects of marketing and promotions, including planning and executing assigned
promotions, personal appearances with well-known athletes and television personalities,
and in-store clinics, and store events.
In 2007, Marlin met Hiedee Webb and in 2010 the two were married. Hiedee has stood
strongly at Marlin’s side throughout his battle with cancer and handles scheduling most
all of his doctor appointments and keeps up with his many medications. Not only did
he get Hiedee when they tied the knot, he also became step dad to three wonderful
children…Zoe, Zack and Eva. In May of 2010, the Lee's welcomed Marlin Dean Lee IV
to the family.
Unfortunately, Marlin and Hiedee were married one weekend, little Marlin “Dean” was
born the next weekend, and sadly the following weekend on Memorial Day, Marlin
started having chest pain. Though his cancer diagnosis didn’t come until over 5 months
later, we now know it was the first very large tumor that was causing the pain…and this
was the beginning of Marlin III and his family’s long, inspirational, yet cruel and painful
journey.
Since his diagnosis in November 2010, Marlin has courageously tackled more than any
human can and should have to endure in their lifetime…19 rounds of chemo..what does
that mean? Every 21 days laying a hospital bed with IV’s in you for 5-7consecutive
hours for 5-8 hours a day AND THEN STILL having a backpack with chemo drugs
hooked up to you the rest day. The cost to stay alive? Severe nausea…vomiting…mouth
sores…weakness/no strength…extreme fatigue & trouble breathing…feeling hot & cold
& not being able to regulate your body temp…losing your hair is the LEAST of your
worries!
Marlin has endured THOUSANDS of hours at doctors visits, hospital stays…xrays,
blood draws to the tune of hundreds more times more than any of else likely will ever
endure…heavy medication of all kinds…shots of all kinds including those in his stomach
that he has administered himself…carrying an oxygen tank with you everywhere you
go…EXTREME pain all over your body because of your cancer…your back, legs, feet,
shoulder, face all excruciatingly painful. He has been called Super-Marlin because of his
perseverance, toughness & courage. A well deserved title as he is truly a one-of-a-kind
person. Taking a cue from Marlin III, the Lee Family continues to fight on, pray and hang
tough…expecting a miracle for Marlin. They are looking at the options and alternative
medical trials and procedures that can save Marlin’s life….but as we said, they are
VERY expensive and not covered by insurance. Please help this incredible, talented,
smart, tough, hard-working, courageous, sweet young father, husband, grandson and
friend…by contributing to Marlin Lee’s Cancer Fund.. You can pay online with Paypal
at [email protected] Thanks to everyone who as already donated and for the
thousands of prayers for Marlin. Please keep those coming and pass this information on
to everyone you know. We not only want to help Marlin but also raise awareness for this
deadly disease called Ewing’s Sarcoma which is SEVERLY under-funded for research.
Please help Marlin Dean Lee III as he continues his monumental fight…he’s always been
a scrapper…always been a tough lil’ guy…always been a hard-worker…always been as
honorable and decent a person who has ever walked this earth…he has always been my
hero & now is MANY more people’s hero. How do I know so much? I am his Dad…I
love and adore my son…please help if you can….
